Questions are potent devices. They frame thoughts in a light of extended possibility: more options, more choices, new directions.
Do we forget to ask questions in life? Do we rush into things without stopping to see if they have more to them? Are we satisfied with where we are at, and unable to see more in a future?
All the questions started with…well, with many things that have been building over time, but they came to a head with a book. Fiction. C.S. Lewis’ third book in the Space Trilogy, That Hideous Strength, to be exact, with some very deep ideas hidden in a story. Maybe Mother Goose was a brilliant plan, and teaching through stories penetrates into us deeper because we do not question it so much. In a way, we really want to know how someone lived through a story, and see if they came to a bad end or not. Then we can know if it is worth trying their way or not.
But you have to trust the narrator. What if there is a Narrator who is telling a story through the world, through life? Not dull and lifeless grey mornings and robot-like routines, but sunshine and shadow and new discoveries and old jokes in the normal activities that give us something to hold onto in life. What if life is more colorful than we like to let on, and we are scared to experience the beauty for ourselves so we settle for movies and stories. What if there is more?
God, thanks for cluing me in to some of the “more” that is out there in life. Thank You for the beauty of life that is also ordinary. Please help me to learn to tell a good story, and keep asking questions. To Your glory, Amen.
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,
But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.” Proverbs 25:2
“37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” John 7:37-39
“16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
