You know you grew up in Sunday school when…

You know you grew up in Sunday School when your want to answer every question in church with a classic response: Jesus/the Bible/love.

You know you grew up in Sunday School when you start singing every time you hear the story of Abraham, Zacchaeus, Jesus’ parable of the builders on rock and sand, David and Goliath, or the parable about the light.

You know you grew up in Sunday School when you randomly find sheets of Bible verses and stories the teacher gave you instead of homework on your way out of church.

You know you grew up in Sunday School when you heard this verse from 2 Timothy 3,

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

But not these verses (read even more here)….

10 Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

That passage comes right before “All Scripture is given…”! Yeah, there’s some…

Things they do not tell you in Sunday School.

You’re going to be persecuted. And it will not get better. But God is with you.

People do not like Jesus – He makes them uncomfortable. But you are not alone.

And you will not understand everything about God and have a nice moral to write on your take-home page. There is a lot more to God than you can imagine, and it will take a lot of growing pains and listening to learn from Him. But it is beyond your wildest dreams. And a lot is written down in the Bible.

I knew the Bible stories as a kid. As an adult, there are times where I fight to stay focused. And then I suddenly imagine Sarah walking through the local farmer’s market and Esther in a beauty pageant, and things become very real. I study the culture and see Peter eating pig and realize that would be like eating something disgusting, dirty, maybe like a slug. The struggle is that the Bible was written in a different cultural context, with a variety of genres. It does not always translate from the text to my life. But we have help: the Holy Spirit. And that means that we can really learn, challenge, take a stand, be confident in our life as believers. No matter what the world is doing,

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

God, thank You for what I learned in Sunday school, and the background I have from those stories. Now, please help them to be more than just stories. Help them to be real people making mistakes and struggling through life just like we do. Please help me as I study with other Christians, to understand what instructions on life You have put in the Bible. Please help my heart to be open to Your Holy Spirit’s teaching, for Your glory. Amen.
