It is funny how much influence a label can have. Who would not prefer “Signature House Steak” rather than “Chain Store Meat” for dinner? But the reason we pay more for these famous brands is because there is reputation attached to the brand name, and it is not just based on advertising. The blouse, car, power tool, or toilet paper is usually better quality, made in a sustainable way, guaranteed for a longer time, and carries a certain aura of power with it.
So what kind of name brand are you? No, you do not have to wear one clothing line all the time or hide the generic product in your grocery cart. For you as a person, who or what do you identify with? Sports? Academics? World peace? A church group? Politics?
I read an interesting verse in Numbers 6 today. You may recognize this passage as the famous Shema blessing given by the priests over Israel,
“22 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 ‘Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,
24 The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
27 ‘So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.'”
Israel was branded as God’s people. And the quality of their lives and choices reflected back on God. People were watching – is this going to be the new trending brand or just a fad?
And it was not just Israel who lives under God’s brand-name status! In 1 Peter 2, the Apostle Peter calls those who follow Christ a priesthood, called to serve under God’s name,
“9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy…. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps…”
Do you live a generic life or are you living up to your brand-name status? Those who have accepted God’s intervention in our lives through Jesus’ payment for our wrongdoing are called children of the King, heirs with Christ, forgiven and free. It’s something to wear for all to see!
God, please help me to stop trying to blend in, and proudly live my status under Your name, Your quality, Your purposes. God, please help my life to turn to match You more and more today and tomorrow and daily. To Your glory, reflecting Your name for admiration, Amen.
