I was on a college campus recently where I learned that the geo-science students meet in a building that will collapse during an earthquake. What irony! And it has made me think…do people who claim to be Christians base their belief on something solid or something shaky? There are going to be earthquakes in life…is my foundation solid?
George Herbert wrote two parts on the Holy Scriptures which speak about the foundation of Christian life found in the Bible:
Oh Book! infinite sweetness! let my heart/ Suck ev’ry letter, and a honey gain,/ Precious for any grief in any part;/ To clear the breast, to mollify all pain./ Thou art all health, health thriving, till it make/ A full eternity: thou art a mass/ Of strange delights, where we may wish and take./ Ladies, look here; this is the thankful glass,/ That mends the looker’s eyes: this is the well/ That washes what it shows. Who can endear/ Thy praise too much? thou art heav’n’s Lidger here,/ Working against the states of death and hell./ Thou art joy’s handsel: heav’n lies flat in thee,/ Subject to ev’ry mounter’s bended knee.
Oh that I knew how all thy lights combine,/ And the configurations of their glory!/ Seeing not only how each verse doth shine,/ But all the constellations of the story./ This verse marks that, and both do make a motion/ Unto a third, that ten leaves off doth lie:/Then as dispersed herbs do match a potion,/ These three make up some Christians’ destiny./ Such are thy secrets, which my life makes good,/ And comments on thee: for in ev’ry thing/ Thy words do find me out, and parallels bring,/ And in another make me understood./ Stars are poor books, and oftentimes do miss/ This book of stars lights to eternal bliss.
There is such a wealth of knowledge and grace that God provides to us from His words. And yet how do we know how to apply them to life? How can we know the truth? Humility is a key. God is truth, so the better we know God, the closer we will come to knowing Truth in this world of opinions. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13,
” 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
God sent His Holy Spirit as a Helper to us so that we can understand more and more who He is, and how this world works, especially as it is revealed in the Bible. And because God does not change, we can be secure through the roughest patches of life that try to shake us off our feet.
Thank You, God, for helping us to understand truth. It is something that sin twists, but we are so hungry to obtain. Thank You for Your work to help us understand truth, and please help me to never think I have arrived or can stop learning. To You be the glory! I love You, Amen.
