See the future

We are obsessed with movies that propose means of time travel. What if there was a box? Or a car? Or even just a TV? What if we could see the future? It is interesting how we try to prepare for it even though we do not know all of the variables. There’s nothing wrong with preparation, but Jesus used a parable to point out how misleading this thinking can become. Tomorrow I will look at all of the background surrounding this parable, but I want to just look at it alone tonight. Luke 12:

“13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

What did this man do wrong? What perspective should he have taken regarding his wealth? What was God’s perspective? Who did the wealth come from anyway? Who has power of life and death? Why do we think we can control the future? Why do we think God cannot?

God, control is a dangerous word. I so often seek to control my life, including my relationship with You. God, You gave us the insight to prepare for life, but also told us that You are the One in control. And sometimes there are natural disasters, fires, wars, and God, why do we give up on You so easily? Please help me learn to trust You and seek Your path for my life rather than living like the god of my own little world. Your will be done. Amen.
