The importance of being Easter

March 27, you do not get to be Easter very often – the date changes by the year. And you may think that this cleaned-up Pagan celebration is going out of style like Easter candy on March 28. But you’re wrong.

This is where the world touches past, present, future. This is where we remember – remember! Hope meets despair and victory triumphs. The Deceiver is crushed (Genesis 3). Jesus’ death was accepted for our sin, and He is leading the way out of the grave for all who will follow Him (1 Corinthians 15):

“O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”

And it is all because one Man, Jesus, focused beyond today’s problems and pain to tomorrow (Philippians 2). We get so caught up in right now, when today and tomorrow are just steps in the journey (Matthew 6). Jesus obeyed God when it made the least sense. He allowed Himself to be falsely accused, murdered, with friends scattering right and left around Him. And He was separated from His Father (Matthew 27). Because Christ was forsaken, we never have to be separated. Because He died, we can be secure for the future. And the things of earth grow strangely dim…and because He lives we can face tomorrow without fear, life is worth living.

March 27 will be full of Church, eggs, candy, fun. But never forget: He is Risen! God wins for eternity, and Jesus is coming back soon. Are you ready?

God, make my heart ready for Easter as Lent comes to a close. And beyond, make my heart ready for heaven. Help me to see You, live in Your truth, and seek Your face. Amen.
