I remember the day the papers were signed and I officially gained two new cousins. It changed our family for the better in so many ways.
Adopted: wanted, accepted, appreciated, understood, loved. And after God, the just Judge, had declared us not-guilty with Jesus covering our sin, He adopted us as fellow heirs with Christ (Romans 8)! Wait, I was the enemy…and then You stepped in to save me. It would have been enough to make me a slave…but You adopted me as an heir? It reminds me of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 – how can You love me like this?
And God does not disown us when we fall apart or flounder in sin. He gave us the Holy Spirit to help our lives regenerate and begin to live in the fullness of His love. And He keeps loving us no matter what. As Peter said,
“3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time,” (1 Peter 1).
So that means my life is going to be one long saunter down Easy St? No. Peter goes on to say,
“6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.”
Do you trust that rope with your life jumping out of a three story window? On a mountain above a cliff? As a bungee cord? Or just to tie down the sofa to the back of your truck? The challenges show us that God is bigger, we can grow, and we’re not home while we are on this earth – our heavenly Father is calling us to something better.
God, thank You for loving prodigal children. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for us, and planning it all out ahead of time. How You love us! It’s by Your power, not any of mine. Please help my life to reflect Your love. Amen.
