All I want for Christmas is…

My Christmas wish list has shrunk dramatically in the past few years. It has gone from dolls and movies to boots and restaurant gift cards. My dreams have shrunk as well. But what if they did not have to? What if they got bigger every year?

I’m challenged by 2 Peter 1:3-8. Here it is in the International Children’s Version:

“3 Jesus has the power of God. His power has given us everything we need to live and to serve God. We have these things because we know him. Jesus called us by his glory and goodness. Through his glory and goodness, he gave us the very great and rich gifts he promised us. With those gifts you can share in God’s nature. And so the world will not ruin you with its evil desires.”

Everyone I know is tired of commercials. Yet we still listen to what they say: buy more, do more, look better, sleep better. What if we could get some advise from Someone who has been around, started the world, and wants to help us get the best from it? God gives us everything we need. Will we take it?

“5 Because you have these blessings, you should try as much as you can to add these things to your lives: to your faith, add goodness; and to your goodness, add knowledge; and to your knowledge, add self-control; and to your self-control, add the ability to hold on; and to your ability to hold on, add service for God; and to your service for God, add kindness for your brothers and sisters in Christ; and to this kindness, add love. If all these things are in you and are growing, they will help you never to be useless. They will help your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ make your lives better.”

So this is what big dreams are made of…one step at a time, building a perspective that helps to capture the best God has for us. It is not so much a ladder as a spiral staircase. We relearn lessons, and look to God for the change in attitude and perspective. And it can blow our minds away.

God, one day closer to Christmas, with another party and several cookies under my belt. God, thank You that You have already given us all we need for a life that is not only purposeful, but fulfilling. Everyone strives for that, and so often I doubt that You can actually provide it. But then You help my perspective again. Please help me to see again the beauty of Your love, humble grace, and passionate plans to remake us to serve You. I want to be part of that! Thank You for the gift of Your Son, and of bigger dreams. Amen.
