Who’s who of heaven

If you could go to dinner with anyone, who would you pick to spend several hours with in intense conversation?

Wisdom would be near the top of my list. Proverbs 8 is her autobiography…

“All the words of my mouth are righteous;
    there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
They are all straight to him who understands,
    and right to those who find knowledge.
10 Take my instruction instead of silver,
    and knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom is better than jewels,
    and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.”

This lady has class. She has something to offer as well, and giving it away for free. You lean closer over the table.

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
    and I find knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
    and perverted speech I hate.”

The fear of the Lord is the opposite of the way of the world. It has such a focused perspective, that all the enticements of this world are like rotten candy.

14 I have counsel and sound wisdom;
    I have insight; I have strength.
15 By me kings reign,
    and rulers decree what is just;
16 by me princes rule,
    and nobles, all who govern justly.[a]”

This Wisdom gal is a celebrity. This is someone who is tight with the people who have the weight of countries to manage. This is someone who is not bragging, but is honestly telling you what she has to offer.

17 I love those who love me,
    and those who seek me diligently find me.
18 Riches and honor are with me,
    enduring wealth and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold,
    and my yield than choice silver.
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,
    in the paths of justice,
21 granting an inheritance to those who love me,
    and filling their treasuries.”

How badly do you want to follow her? She is not playing hide and seek. This is an open invitation to a road that may be hard, but will have the best rewards. Not all gold sparkles in the sunshine.

22 “The Lord possessed[b] me at the beginning of his work,[c]
    the first of his acts of old.”

And this is the crown on her resume. God used her to create the earth, to plan it, shape it, grid it, weave it with meaning. This is the “deep magic” of Narnia (see the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) that goes beyond the quick-notes version the enemy sees. This is the plan God had in mind when Christ died in the place of sinners and God saw right through Satan’s dance of triumph to his ultimate demise. This is God speaking to Job and showing him that life does not always make sense, but even what God has done with creation is beyond our ability to comprehend (Job 38-41). So we need to wait on His timing.

Wisdom is a neat gal, and the best part is, she is eager for a long-term friendship. How far will you walk with her? Where will the adventures take you? Never forget, God is the One who began it all.

God, thank You for Wisdom, and all that she has to offer. It’s free: that’s amazing! You do so much for us that we neglect and forget to marvel over. Thank You God, for being beyond our comprehension and reminding us of that, then stepping into our lives to work for good. You are awesome, and I do not understand You, but I want to take this journey with You. Please teach me to lean on You every step. Amen.
